Hi, Y'all!

Did you miss me? Well, you should've taken better aim!

Can you tell I'm feeling better? Yesterday, I only took 4 of the allowed 6 Ultram. That's quite an improvement from last week at this time. Trust me on that.

But I'm not gonna push my luck by staying up too long and writing a long blog, just wanted to let y'all know I'm doin' better.

When I run the spellcheck...it always wants to change my "gonna" to gonad. I find that incredibly amusing! That probably means something, but I just don't care.

There has been a commercial runnin' lately that makes me realize how much I treasure the Dearly Beloved, aside from the "earth moved/angels wept" sex of course. [had to throw that in to make our chirrens who read the blog go "EWWWWW!" and to try to raise my rating to at least a PG-13]
Anyway, in this commercial a woman opens a journal an reads an entry about her fibromyalgia. Well, she no sooner starts getting wound up in listing her pains and woes than DB and I say, in unison, "and then I went to the ED, and that mean old AD, wouldn't give me any Vicodins, or Demoral or Dialudid or nuthin'." Shortly after we started givin' this commercial the MST treatment, we started lookin' at each other. Then when we were finished we said, still lookin' at one another, "Get Out of My Head!"

How can I not adore a man who can get inside my head like that?

She LIVES!!!

Thank you ALL for your solicitous and caring comments. I hope those of you who are also suffering during this gawdawful season are doing better by now, too.

I got some good medicine for the sneezing and sniffling, but about 3day into taking that, my dry cough got MUCH worse. It got so bad, that I sounded like I was trying to cough up a lung. Except nuttin' came out, up, or was otherwise produced. I just laid on the couch and moaned all of that week. Except for the times I'd prop myself up and try to have a productive cough.

Monday, I called the Doc's office. They could barely understand my hoarse voice when I asked for some cough medicine. But at least I HAD a voice. The Fabulous LaP came up so I could give her her B'day present. She said I reminded her of the way she sounded when she'd had the oldmonia. But, I've had that before, so I KNEW it wasn't that.
Anyway, when I picked up the non-codeine cough syrup, I knew it must be some kinda kick-ass stuff 'cause the directions said to "take 1 TEAspoon every 12 hours as needed." It worked. I slept through the night for the first time in 3 days.

I went down to Killeen Tuesday because Mom had some Dr. appointments on Wednesday and Thursday over at Scott & White. She doesn't like to drive over to Temple by herself anymore and I had promised to drive her last month. So, sick as I was, I went. A Promise is a Promise. Turns out she had asked my Bad Bro to go with her on Wednesday as well! But it's just as well that I went, too. He was giving the Docs [Mom had 2 app'ts. Wed.] some misinformation that was making Mom look less than competent. And she was just passively sitting there, not correcting him. So I spoke up, told the docs MY take on the situation. Bad Bro looked upset with me, but he didn't correct me. I have a suspicion that BadBro has been planting seeds of discord with Mom against GoodBro, LittleBro and me. I also found out that he has had Mom add him as a co-owner and signatory to her financial accounts. As he has been fiscally irresponsible with his OWN money in the past, this does not bode well for Mom's financial security.

Thursday, it was just Mom and me with two different Docs, but it didn't go too well either. I told Mom, "I promised Daddy that I would look after you, and that's all I've been trying to do. All four of your kids, not just me, think the Doctor you have now is not treating you correctly. He over medicates you, and he doesn't follow up on the medicines he prescribes for you to see if they are working properly. You been having a problem with ____ and ____ for 3 years and he has not asked you how the medicine is working. He didn't ask you about your weight loss [she's lost 70 pounds over 3 yrs]. He hasn't asked you about your balance problems. He has just totally dropped the ball in so many areas of your health care, Mom that all of us are concerned about you. But, if you don't want my help, that's fine. Because I certainly don't need this stress. The next time you have a fall, Good Bro or Little Bro can arrange your care since you don't want my help. Because if you keep seeing Doc Incompetent, that will happen sooner or later." And I sat down, shut up and waited for the Specialist I had arranged for her to see to come back in the room so I could tell him she didn't want to see him after all.

What I wanted to say, and didn't was... When Bad Bro has slapped you in a Nursing Home, I'll come visit you more than the once/month I do now. Because that's what he's angling for. He tried to get her to move out of her house two years ago. His plan was that He and his "wife" would pay for her to live in an apartment, and THEY would move into her house and "take care of it" along with her two teenage sons. Care to guess how the other Bros and I reacted to that gem of an idea? Now that I see the shithole of an apartment they have HER mother in, I know even more what a lousy idea it was.

So, between being physically sick and then going through the emotional wringer... I haven't felt much like bloggin'. I'm leaving Monday to go up and visit with the Floozie in Mizzousi, so I bet I do better next week.

The Age of AIDS

Oh, geez! I can hardly wrap my mind around the concept that it's been 25 years since our modern day Plague reared its ugly head in this country.
I'm still listening to the tail-end of a Frontline program of the title I used above. And while it brought back lots of memories of the early days, and I listened to folks I had read about in Larry Kramer's And the Band Played On say the same things they had been saying 25 years ago, I also heard some new folks from WHO, and from Africa, and Thailand, and other foreign lands talk about their individual and their countries' responses to what has become a global pandemic.
It's only going to get worse. The new generation of sexually active young adults have forgotten the lessons of the '90's. They don't think HIV can touch them. They are they fastest growing demographic for new infections.
I still get angry with every member of the Reagan administration who could have influenced the speed of the response, the course of research, the efforts of prevention back in the mid- to late '80's. And, yes, all you Reagan fans, that includes Saint Ronnie. If he hadn't been afraid to say the word AIDS, if he hadn't been such a raging homophobe, if he'd had an ounce of foresight for the cost of treating the disease vs the cost of preventing the disease, or at least the spread of the disease to the extent we now see in this country... but all that is shoulda, woulda, coulda that just drives me crazier than I already am.
And let's not forget Slick Willie. Jocelyn Elders was the best Surgeon General he could have possibly hoped for. SHe had the right idea about condoms in High Schools and Bill was a cowardly quisling (or is that redundant?) to accept her resignation. He should have given that women a Presidential Citation!
I guess it's because I worked as a volunteer and then later as a paid staffer at a grassroots AIDS service org. that I feel so strongly about this.
I went to grad school for a while, majoring in Community Health Ed. My advisor said she hated to loose me. She said I had a great mind, and I was full of "FIRE", but since what I wanted to do was design education programs for the Middle school and High school level to prevent HIV, STDs, and teen pregnancy, she said I'd spend my professional career beating my head against a brick wall and go home every night with a raging headache. Parents who think abstinence will keep their children safe from these dangers are deluding themselves and placing their children at risk. I think abstinence is a wonderful idea. But teenage hormones sometimes have different ideas. And that's why our kids need to know how to avoid life threatening and life changing diseases and pregnancy. Love is not always forever, Herpes IS. Or as the Tee my 13 y.o. XX offspring borrowed from me and wore to school one day said : "Don't Let Affection Lead to Infection, Put Protection on that Erection".
Do I need to say I got called to school to bring her an 'appropriate' top? When I got there I asked the Nurse to join the Ass't. Principal and the Barbarian Princess and I for a conference. When we were all assembled, I had B.P. tell them how many baby showers she had been invited to, so far, that year for classmates. She told them she'd been invited to 3 showers. I was appalled! And I told them so, in no uncertain terms. And I asked how, in light of those circumstances, that, just in her circle of friends, three 13 y.o. girls were pregnant, her wearing a Tee advocating prevention was inappropriate?
They hemmed and hawed and harumphed and finally the Nurse said, "Well, we don't discuss sex at school in mixed company."
Me:"So they can HAVE sex, they just can't TALK about having it?" Nurse:"Now, Mrs. D...."Me:"MY name is NOT MRS.D... it's MS B..." Nurse:"The school board sets policy...""Me :"Never mind, I can see I'm dealing with peoplpe who would rather bury their heads in the sand than protect children givin into their care. Here, B.P., go put this one on." ANd I handed her a Tee that said "What a Wonderful day it Will be When our Schools Have all the Money They Need and The Air Force Has to Hold a Bake Sale to Buy A Bomber" They didn't think too much of that one judging by their expressions, but I guess they didn't want to set me off on another tirade, cause they didn't say anything.
